What a Chimney Liner Does, and How to Know Yours Has Failed
The liner is the part of the chimney that keeps the fire safely contained, and a failed one is genuinely dangerous. Here is what the liner does and the signs it is no longer doing it.
The job the liner does that nothing else can
Of all the parts of a chimney, the liner is the one whose job is most directly about safety. It is the smooth inner channel, clay tile in most older chimneys and stainless steel in many modern relines, that runs the length of the flue and contains the heat and the combustion gases of the fire. Its purpose is to keep that heat off the surrounding masonry and the wood framing of the house, to give the smoke and gases a smooth path up and out, and to protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. A chimney without a sound liner is a chimney whose fire is no longer reliably contained, and that is not a minor problem, it is the central one.
It is worth being clear about why this is so serious in a home. The chimney runs up through the wall, surrounded by framing, insulation, and the structure of the house. The liner is what stands between the fire's heat and all of that. When the liner is intact, the heat goes up and out the way it should. When the liner is cracked or corroded, heat can reach the framing behind the masonry, and carbon monoxide and combustion gas can escape into the living space. Both of those are exactly the outcomes a chimney is built to prevent, and the liner is the component that does the preventing.
How clay-tile liners fail
The clay-tile liners in most older Upper Darby chimneys are durable, but they do fail, and they fail in recognizable ways. The most sudden cause is a chimney fire, which heats the tiles so rapidly and so unevenly that they crack from the thermal shock, sometimes shattering outright. After any chimney fire, even a small one, the liner needs inspecting before another fire is lit, because cracked tiles can no longer contain the next one. The slower cause is the freeze-thaw movement of the masonry around the tiles, which shifts and stresses them over years until they crack, and the simple aging of clay that has gone through decades of heating and cooling.
Once a tile cracks, the gap it leaves is a path for heat and gas to escape into the chimney structure and the wall. A single cracked tile may not announce itself in any obvious way from the firebox, which is precisely the danger. The chimney can keep drafting smoke and seem to work fine while the containment that makes it safe is already broken. This is why a camera inspection is the only reliable way to assess a clay liner. It reads the tiles from the inside, where the cracks are, rather than from the firebox, where they hide.
How metal liners fail, and the signs of trouble
Metal liners, usually stainless steel, are common in relines and in chimneys venting gas, oil, or wood-stove appliances. They fail differently than clay. The main enemy is corrosion, driven by the moisture and the acidic condensate that some appliances produce, especially when a liner is undersized, oversized, or uninsulated for what it vents. A metal liner that has corroded develops holes and weak spots that let gas and heat escape just as a cracked tile does, and a liner that was never correctly sized for its appliance corrodes faster because it runs at the wrong temperature for clean, dry venting.
For the homeowner, the practical question is how to know any liner has failed, clay or metal, and the honest answer is the same in both cases. You generally cannot tell from below, so you rely on a camera inspection and on a few warning signs that warrant getting one. Pieces of clay tile or flakes of liner material showing up in the firebox, a strong persistent smell, draft problems, staining or dampness on the wall near the chimney, and any history of a chimney fire are all reasons to have the liner read with a camera. When the inspection shows a failed liner, a reline is not an upsell, it is the work that makes the chimney safe to use again. And when the liner is sound, a good sweep will tell you that just as plainly.
There is one more situation that catches homeowners off guard, which is changing the appliance the chimney serves. A flue that contained an open wood fire for decades is often the wrong size and the wrong material for a new high-efficiency furnace, water heater, or gas insert installed later, and venting a modern appliance into an old oversized masonry flue is a common cause of liner trouble. The appliance runs cooler and produces more condensate than the old fireplace did, the oversized flue runs cool and cannot carry that moisture out cleanly, and the result is accelerated corrosion or, on a clay liner, moisture and acid breaking down the tiles and mortar. If you have swapped out a heating appliance and vented it into an existing chimney, the liner is worth checking, because a flue that suited the old appliance may be quietly failing under the new one.

What a reline involves and why sizing decides everything
When a liner needs replacing, the work is more involved than dropping a pipe down the chimney, and the part that matters most is the part you will never see. The liner has to be sized to the appliance it serves. A flue that is too large for what vents into it runs cool, drafts poorly, and lays down creosote or, on a gas or oil appliance, lets corrosive condensate attack the new liner, which is how a fresh reline can fail early if it was sized by guesswork. A flue that is too small starves the fire of the draft it needs. Getting the size right is what makes the new liner draft cleanly and last, and it is the calculation a careful sweep makes before any liner goes in.
The material and the installation matter just as much. A stainless steel liner sized correctly and insulated where the application calls for it keeps the flue at the temperature it needs to carry the heat and the moisture out rather than condensing them inside the chimney.
